Top of the World
The Sferisterio arena was built thanks to the "generosity of 100 consorts" from Macerata for the game of ball (sphaera) with the armband, a sporting discipline in vogue in the Marches from the 15th century until the mid-19th century.
Work began on October 2, 1820, and continued until 1829 when finally on September 5, in an exceptional atmosphere of popular celebration, the Sferisterio was augured.
In 1921, for the first time, an opera was staged: a memorable edition of "Aida," commissioned by Macerata Count Pier Alberto Conti, drew spectators from all over Italy.
The following year an acclaimed edition of "La Gioconda" was held. Every summer since 1967, the Sferisterio's Lyrical Seasons have drawn the most discerning audiences to applaud original offerings and prestigious casts in a felicitous, monumental yet intimate structure that guarantees perfect visibility and excellent acoustics.
