On the edge of a cliff at the western tip of Lesbos, tree trunks turned to stone emerge from the clayey ground like silent sentinels. They are neither sculptures nor artistic installations: they are remnants of a forest buried by volcanic eruptions about 20 million years ago, mineralized over the millennia until they became pure silica. Walking among these fossilized trunks, some of which still retain the original texture of the bark, is a disorienting experience that unexpectedly blends geology and landscape.
The Sigri Petrified Forest Park is virtually unknown to international tourism. Those who come here — mostly geologists, naturalists, and Greek travelers — find an open-air site where the finds are not protected by display cases but are walkable, touchable, and observable from every angle. The main path winds along a scenic trail on the edge of the coast, with direct views of the Aegean Sea and, on clear days, the Turkish coast rising on the horizon just a few kilometers away.
The morning light on the fossil trunks
In the early hours of the day, when the sun rises from the eastern side of the island, the light reaches the site of Sigri obliquely, sliding sideways over the petrified trunks and accentuating every grain, every growth ring preserved in the rock. The dominant colors at this moment are dark ochre, ash gray, and the rust-red of iron present in the silica. The scenic path runs parallel to the cliff, and at certain points the ground drops almost vertically towards the sea. From here, on days with high visibility, the silhouette of the Anatolian coast is clearly distinguishable: a dark and continuous strip that defines the horizon, reminding how geographically close Lesbos is to Turkey — in some places less than ten kilometers separate the two shores.
At sunset, the light turns orange and then red, and the petrified trunks seem to almost catch fire. Shadows stretch between one trunk and another, drawing irregular geometric lines on the ground. The sea changes color in sequence: first deep blue, then gold, then a gray-pink that quickly fades into the purple of twilight. It is one of those views that do not require photographic filters or particular angles: just being present is enough.
The Natural Museum of Sigri and the Scientific Context
Just a few minutes' walk from the park is the Natural Museum of the Petrified Forest of Sigri, which provides the scientific context necessary to understand what has just been seen. The museum houses sections of fossilized trunks, leaves, and seeds, as well as explanatory panels about the volcanic catastrophe that buried and preserved this subtropical forest from the Oligocene-Miocene. Visiting the museum before the outdoor path helps to recognize the plant species in the fossil remains, some of which belong to genera that are now extinct in Europe.
The petrified forest of Lesbos is recognized as a Protected Natural Monument by Greek legislation, and the site of Sigri is one of the main outcrop nuclei, along with others scattered throughout the island's interior. Scientific research at the site has been active for decades and has contributed to reconstructing the climate and flora of the Mediterranean in ancient times.

The best time to visit the park is in the late afternoon, about two hours before sunset: the light is optimal for photographing fossils and you naturally arrive at the time of the most picturesque view of the Turkish coast. In summer the sun is strong and the ground exposed: bring water, a hat, and closed shoes.
