St Kitts scenic railway - Basseterre | Secret World Trip Planner

St Kitts’ narrow-gauge tourist train – the ‘Last Railway in the West Indies’ – is a reminder of a time when the fertile Caribbean island’s prime industry was not tourism but sugar. In 1775, when the British owned the isle, St Kitts had 200 estates growing ‘white gold’; in the early 20th century, a round-island railway was built, to transport the cane to a central factory. When the industry declined, the line reopened as a wonderful way for visitors to see the wave-crashed shores, swaying palms, emerald highlands – rising to 1,156m Mount Liamuiga – and crumbling remains of old cane plantations. Currently, the train only runs along St Kitts’ Atlantic coast with a bus tour completing the circuit. There's a stop at Brimstone Hill Fortress, which was built by the British to protect their precious sugar isle.

Frequently Asked Questions

The St Kitts scenic railway is a narrow-gauge tourist train that originally transported sugar cane to a central factory when it was built in the early 20th century. It's called the 'Last Railway in the West Indies' because it's a remnant of the island's sugar industry era, and when that industry declined, the railway was repurposed as a tourist attraction rather than being abandoned like other Caribbean railways.
The train journey offers views of wave-crashed Atlantic shores, swaying palms, emerald highlands, and the dramatic Mount Liamuiga which rises to 1,156m. The route also passes crumbling remains of old sugar cane plantations and includes a stop at the historic Brimstone Hill Fortress, built by the British to protect the island during its sugar-growing era.
Currently, the train only runs along St Kitts' Atlantic coast, so a bus tour completes the full circuit of the island. This combination allows visitors to experience both the train journey and see the areas not covered by the railway.
Brimstone Hill Fortress was built by the British to protect their valuable sugar island during the colonial era when St Kitts had 200 estates producing sugar. The fortress represents an important part of the island's colonial military history and is a notable stop during the scenic railway tour.
The round-island railway was built in the early 20th century to transport sugar cane to a central factory during St Kitts' booming sugar industry. By 1775, when the British owned the island, St Kitts had 200 sugar estates producing 'white gold,' making the railway a crucial part of the island's economy at that time.
