The Bell Tower and the Clock Tower. - Oliveto Citra | Secret World Trip Planner

The whole construction consists of two buildings separated by function, but structurally linked, becoming together with the Castle of medieval origins the landmark of Oliveto Citra. Lastly, we note that the earthquake of 1688 caused the destruction of the church of the Scalelle, but saw the rebuilding of the medieval Castle (XII century) in the highest area, as well as the presumed construction of the Clock Tower. Currently the global image of the object of intervention, presents the lower part bastionata dating back to medieval times. The main facade of the Bell Tower with the Tower, pour their most interesting image on the square below, destination of pilgrims visiting the "Madonna del Castello". The Clock Tower, and in particular the Bell Tower, have undergone various consolidation interventions over time, the last in order of time following the earthquake of 23/11/1980.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Bell Tower and Clock Tower are two structurally linked buildings that serve as landmarks of Oliveto Citra alongside the medieval Castle. The Clock Tower was presumed to be constructed following the 1688 earthquake, while the Bell Tower's main facade overlooks the square below and has undergone several consolidation interventions, most recently after the 1980 earthquake.
The most recent consolidation intervention on both towers was completed following the earthquake of November 23, 1980. Prior to this, the structures had undergone various repairs over the centuries to maintain their integrity and structural stability.
Visitors can observe the main facades of both towers overlooking the central square, which is a popular destination for pilgrims visiting the 'Madonna del Castello' shrine. The lower part of the structure features distinctive medieval bastionata (bastion) architecture dating back to medieval times.
The 1688 earthquake destroyed the nearby church of the Scalelle but led to the rebuilding of the medieval Castle in the highest area and the presumed construction of the Clock Tower. This reconstruction period was significant in shaping the current architectural complex that defines Oliveto Citra.
Together with the medieval Castle, the Bell Tower and Clock Tower form the iconic skyline and landmark of Oliveto Citra, attracting pilgrims and visitors to the square. Their architectural significance lies in their medieval origins, structural design, and role as spiritual and cultural focal points for the community.
