When the morning light descends between the beeches of the Kromlau park, something geometrically improbable happens: a dark stone arch reflects in the still water below, forming a perfect circle. It is neither an optical illusion nor a photographic manipulation. It is simply the Rakotzbrücke, known outside Germany as the Devil's Bridge, which stands in the landscaped park of Kromlau, in the municipality of Gablenz, in the state of Saxony.
The bridge was built around 1860 at the behest of the landowner Friedrich Hermann Rötschke, who transformed this area of Lusatia into an English romantic garden. The structure is made of basalt, a dark volcanic stone that gives the arch its gloomy and fairy-tale appearance that inspired the diabolical nickname. Popular legend has it that only the devil could build such a thin and daring arch that seems impossible according to physics: the span tapers towards the top to appear almost fragile, yet it has withstood for over one hundred and fifty years.
An architecture designed for illusion
What makes the Rakotzbrücke extraordinary is not only its shape but the fact that it was designed explicitly to create the circular reflection. Rötschke had the artificial lake dug at the foot of the bridge with a calculated depth and position so that, on calm days, the arch and its reflected image would form a geometrically precise circle. Looking from the edge of the water, the circle seems to float between the shore and the sky like an open door to another world.
The visible construction details on site deserve close attention. The shoulders of the bridge are flanked by columns of basalt arranged irregularly, imitating the natural rock formations typical of Saxony. Some of these columns emerge directly from the water, creating a scenic effect reminiscent of volcanic cliffs. The whole is surrounded by vegetation that turns red and orange in autumn, multiplying the chromatic reflections on the surface of the lake.
The Kromlau Park: context and atmosphere
The Rakotzbrücke is not an isolated monument but the focal point of the Rhododendronpark Kromlau, a landscaped park of about 200 hectares that includes artificial lakes, forest paths, neo-Gothic ruins specifically built as decorative elements, and a botanical collection focused on rhododendrons. Between May and June, when the rhododendrons are in bloom, the park transforms into a chromatically explosive environment that contrasts with the dark sobriety of the basalt.
The park is open all year round and entry is free, which makes it even more surprising considering the quality of the visual experience it offers. There are no barriers, ticket offices, or mandatory paths: you enter and walk freely along the paths, many of which are unpaved and require suitable shoes, especially after rain.
When and how to visit
The best time to photograph the perfect circle is in the early morning, when the wind is absent and the surface of the lake is completely still. Even gray and foggy days produce exceptional reflections, as the diffused light eliminates the specular reflections that would break the geometry of the image. In summer, weekends bring an increasing number of visitors attracted by social media, so arriving before nine in the morning makes a difference between finding the bridge deserted or crowded.
Gablenz is located in the Upper Lusatia, about 120 kilometers east of Dresden and a few kilometers from the Polish border. It is not served by direct trains: the most practical way to get there is by car, with parking available near the park entrance. Those traveling without a vehicle can reach the city of Weißwasser by train, which is about 15 kilometers away, and continue by taxi or bicycle. The average visit time is around two hours, enough to walk the main trails and reach the various viewpoints in the park.
Why the trip is worth it
In an era where the places photographed on social media tend to be overcrowded and disappointing in real life, the Rakotzbrücke maintains a rare quality: reality surpasses the image. The stone circle reflected in the water creates an effect that no photograph can fully capture, as it depends on the stillness of the air, the light of the moment, and the exact perspective from which it is viewed. It is an experience that requires stopping, waiting, and observing.
The fact that the park is little known outside of Germany means that the atmosphere remains that of an authentic place, not yet transformed into an industrial tourist attraction. No souvenirs, no audio guides, no barriers. Just a basalt arch built one hundred and fifty years ago by a landowner with a taste for the impossible, and a lake that every morning, if the wind allows, transforms it into a circle.
