About The Flysch Cliffs

The Flysch Cliffs - Zumaia | Secret World Trip Planner

Flysch is an imposing cliff located between Zumaia and Deba, in the heart of the Basque coast. It is a beautiful place to see from afar and admire up close, as you can climb up to the tip of the cliff and enjoy the incredible view. The cliffs in this area are truly breathtaking, especially knowing that they have more than 50 million years of geological history. This area is also home to a wide variety of flora and fauna and was declared a "protected coastal biotope" in 2009.The Zumaia Flysch Trail begins near the San Telmo chapel in the village and then ventures up and down the coast, offering postcard views and crystal clear waters in which to bathe. The finish is about fifteen kilometres further west, at Deba, a seaside resort and fishing port. The walk is indicated as being of moderate difficulty and can be easily completed in about five hours. Be careful, however, not to be fooled: especially in summer it is easy to meet people walking in flip-flops, but the advice is to always prefer sneakers designed for hiking. If you wish, local tour operators also organise visits on board small boats: a more comfortable trip, but which does not allow a really close look at the flysch. Those who have watched the TV series 'Game of Thrones' ('The Iron Throne') know that the castle of , the ancient home of the Targaryens, is claimed by the "mother of dragons" Daenerys at the beginning of the seventh season. Some of the scenes set at Dragonstone were shot right along the flysch path of Zumaia, particularly those set on the beach overlooked by the fortress. The set designers also crafted the Targaryen throne to resemble the oblique layers of rock that make up the flysch.
