The Shrine of the Madonnetta and its Nativity Scene

The Church of the Madonnetta is located in the historic center of Genoa, in the Carignano area, and is one of the oldest churches in the city. The church, built in the 15th century, has undergone numerous renovations and extensions over the centuries until it assumed its present appearance.Inside the Church of the Madonnetta is a particularly famous crib, known as "Leonardo's crib," created by Leonardo Bufalini of Genoa between 1971 and 1980. This nativity scene consists of more than 200 life-size polychrome terracotta statues representing biblical characters and everyday life.The crib is placed in a set design created with great attention to detail, which faithfully reproduces the setting of Palestine at the time of Jesus. The setting is animated by numerous special effects, such as day and night light, the movement of water in a river, the flight of birds, and the sound of animals.Leonardo's nativity scene is famous for its great historical accuracy and attention to detail, making it an extraordinary work of art. Every year, thousands of visitors from all over Italy and abroad come to the Madonnetta Church to admire this unique nativity scene.In addition to the nativity scene, the Church of the Madonnetta houses numerous works of art inside, such as the painting "Madonna and Child" by Domenico Piola and the statues of St. John the Baptist and St. Anthony the Abbot by Filippo Parodi. The church is also known for its 52-meter-high bell tower, which offers a spectacular panoramic view of the city of Genoa.
