Perched high above the idyllic island of Zákynthos, a massive flag billows in the wind as a towering tribute to the Greek mainland. Although it no longer holds the title of the world's largest flag, this majestic banner still reigns as the largest Greek flag and remains a remarkable point of interest on the island.
The journey to erect this monumental flag began in March 2006, when the Liveris family sought to draw attention to their restaurant. With that vision in mind, they embarked on a year-long endeavor to create a flag that would soon become a landmark.
The flagpole alone is an engineering marvel. Standing at 164 feet (50 meters), it narrows from a circumference of 39 inches (one meter) at the base to a mere 25 centimeters at the top. Specially crafted in China and shipped to Zákynthos, the pole is designed to support the colossal weight of the flag, which weighs around 176 pounds (80 kilograms). The flag's dimensions are equally jaw-dropping: it spans a surface area of over 7,000 square feet (670 square meters), so large that it requires an electric motor to be hoisted into the air.
On May 20, 2007, this grand display of national pride was recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records as the largest flag at that time. Although it has since been overtaken by flags from other nations like the United States, Saudi Arabia, and Bolivia, it remains a source of pride for Greece and continues to captivate locals and tourists alike.
One of the flag's most striking features is its scenic clifftop location, which enhances its visual impact. Overlooking azure waters and set against the backdrop of the sky, the flag becomes a breathtaking spectacle, a beautiful fusion of nature and nationalism.
The flag is also a popular waypoint for boat tours along the Zákynthos coastline. Its commanding presence from both the land and the sea makes it a unique spot for sightseeing and photography, allowing visitors to marvel at its grandeur from multiple perspectives.
