The Acqua Fraggia waterfalls are located in Borgonuovo and the parts visible from the road are only the most impressive, but not the only ones. The Acqua Fraggia basin is located at the western entrance of the Val Bregaglia. The stream of the same name springs from the Pizzo di Lago at 3050 msm, at a point of Alpine watershed from which rivers flow down into the North Sea, the Black Sea and the Mediterranean. As it descends towards the valley floor, it crosses two suspended valleys, both of glacial origin, one at an altitude of two thousand and the other at an altitude of one thousand metres. The Acqua Fraggia then forms a series of waterfalls, of which the lower ones, with their double jump are only the most impressive. This explains the origin of the name Acqua Fraggia, from "acqua fracta", that is to say a stream continuously interrupted by waterfalls.
The waterfalls, with their majestic spectacle, impressed even Leonardo da Vinci who, "finding himself passing through Valle di Ciavenna", admired their wild beauty and mentioned them in his "Atlantic Codex". From the top of the waterfalls you can walk along a path among chestnut trees, brooms and rocks; from here you can admire from close up this wonderful natural spectacle, unique in its kind for beauty and grandeur. A short detour on the right leads to a large terrace, a few meters from the thunderous whirlwind of water.
