Cette tour défensive a été achevée en 1853 et faisait partie de la deuxième enceinte de la ville, la plus intérieure. L'édifice, d'une hauteur de 12 mètres et d'un diamètre de 34, est le seul des deux tours de la ville. Avec la tour Wrangel, elle assurait la surveillance de la zone du lac supérieur et de la porte Rossgarten.
La tour est l'une des principales attractions de la ville. Son profil majestueux, qui se découpe sur les eaux du lac, attire chaque jour des foules de touristes. Les trois étages de la tour peuvent être visités et abritent aujourd'hui le musée de l'ambre.
