Trivento

The center is situated 599 m above sea level on a hill to the right of the Trigno River. It stands on the site of ancient Terventum, in the territory of the Pentri. Of the Roman municipium, which took over from an earlier Samnite settlement, scant remains of wall structures remain, while numerous are the inscriptions, sculptural fragments and architectural decorations, found in the area of the settlement. The position in which it is located allows it to dominate the entire surrounding area, particularly the Trigno valley. Its territory covers an area of 73.3 sq. km, thus giving rise to numerous districts. It is a typically medieval village, developed on the top of a hill and branching downward in an intrigue of alleys, lanes, winding stairways and small clearings. The plain area is connected to the older part of the town by a flight of 365 steps leading to the upper part of the town, called the Piano. Its surroundings feature outstanding natural sites. Morgia Pietrafenda, Morgia dei Briganti, Morgia del Principe, Tratturo Celano-Foggia, Ponte di Legno (Morricone locality), Quercipiana and Monterosso offer opportunities for hiking and relaxing. On July 28, the Feast of Saints Nazario, Celso and Vittore, patron saints of the city and the Diocese of Trivento, an ancient, participatory and evocative procession takes place in the diocesan capital in which the precious silver busts of the patron saints are carried on the shoulders through the streets of the city, with whom the effigy of St. Emidio Bishop and Martyr, invoked by the people of Trivento to protect them from earthquakes, has been keeping company since 1806. According to popular devotion, in fact, St. Emidio's intervention enabled the city of Trivento to remain unharmed by the devastating earthquake that struck Molise on July 26, 1805.
