El mausoleo, un pequeño templo de estilo neoclásico, fue terminado en 1831, adornado con estatuas y relieves. A ambos lados de la puerta de entrada hay dos estatuas de Luigi Argenti que representan la Ciencia y la Religión, y en el arquitrabe las palabras "A Alessandro Volta - La viuda y los hijos".
En la pared del fondo se encuentra el sarcófago de mármol del escultor Bayer, coronado por un busto esculpido por el artista Giovan Battista Comolli. Flanqueando el busto hay dos genios alados, uno de los cuales corona a Volta. En el panel superior hay un relieve que representa el episodio más célebre de la vida de Volta: la presentación de la batería a Napoleón Bonaparte en París en 1801.
