Uchisar, la "Matera turca" excavada en la roca, es una característica ciudadela de toba de Capadocia, en el centro de Turquía.
Uno de los lugares más impresionantes es sin duda la fortaleza de Uchisar Kalesi, a 5 km de Goreme. Kalesi significa "castillo" en la lengua local.
Esta imponente fortaleza parece dominar con su mole el pequeño pueblo de abajo. Se trata de una roca de toba volcánica que ha sido utilizada durante siglos por los habitantes del valle como lugar de refugio ante los ataques militares. En el interior del castillo se han descubierto varias iglesias excavadas en la roca. La razón podría ser la proximidad de Goreme, una ciudad rica en monumentos religiosos.
Desde el castillo, hay una magnífica vista de la enorme montaña Erciyes en la distancia. La vista es aún más espectacular al atardecer, cuando el cielo se ilumina con colores cálidos.
