Civitavecchia is the principal cruise port serving Rome, sitting on the Tyrrhenian coast about 80 kilometres northwest of the capital. The harbour has handled maritime traffic since the Roman emperor Trajan ordered its construction in the 2nd century AD, and the hexagonal Trajanic basin is still visible today. The old town is guarded by the Forte Michelangelo, a Renaissance fortress partly designed by Michelangelo himself, overlooking the waterfront.
This video gives cruise passengers a practical look at what to expect when docking here — the port layout, the gateway to Rome and Tuscany, and the character of the town itself. Beyond transit, Civitavecchia offers seafood restaurants along the lungomare and a compact historic centre worth exploring before or after a cruise.
