Giglio Castello is a small and charming village overlooking the paradise on earth that is the island of Giglio. Walls all around, impregnable towers, the gateway with the ancient loopholes from which archers aimed at the Saracen pirates, in short, a village to be discovered, as the weapons taken from the damned pirates forced to surrender and kept in the Church of San Pietro Apostolo.Erected by the Pisans in the twelfth century, repeatedly expanded and restored by the Grand Dukes of Tuscany, is surrounded by imposing walls interspersed with three circular towers and seven rectangular base. It is still almost intact in its interior: the narrow streets, often surmounted by arches, the balzuoli (external stairs to access the upper floors), the Piazza XVIII Novembre on which dominates the Rocca Aldobrandesca, imposing defensive construction, make Giglio Castello a charming destination, the unique charm. On September 15, we celebrate the patron saint of Giglio Island and the Castle "San Mamiliano", the most important traditional festival of the island. For some years now, on the last weekend of September, the Festa dell'Uva e delle Canitine aperte is organized, an event that has become a sort of small tradition that is very popular.
