A floor by floor would increase the need to erect boundary walls and to build the castle to defend the population since the Byzantine attacks. The construction of the medieval fortress dates back to the 11th century. It has a quadrangular structure in wood and stone, with four towers on the sides, a large inner courtyard, containing a cistern to collect rainwater, and a drawbridge, around which the village of Monasterace Superiore was built. Of the original construction of the Castle only the stone access bridge and a few stretches of the surrounding walls remain, as it underwent many modifications starting from 1464, the year in which the Knights left Monasterace. It was, in fact, until that year that the fortress remained in the hands of the Caracciolo princes. The village can be reached by three gates: the east gate, Porta Marina, the main one; the south gate, better preserved; finally, there is the more modern gate, called "tripu".

Frequently Asked Questions

The name Monasterace is believed to derive from the Greek word 'Monasteraki,' meaning 'small monastery.' This refers to a small Byzantine monastery that existed as early as the sixth century AD, whose ruins can still be seen today and are called the Monastery of San Marco, built within an archaeological area connected to the ancient Magna Graecia colony of Kaulon.
Monasterace is split into two hamlets: Monasterace Superiore, a small medieval village perched in a panoramic position just 3 km from the southern Ionian coast, and Monasterace Marina, a modern tourist-oriented center. The upper village maintains its historic medieval character, while the marina area offers contemporary amenities and beach access.
The medieval fortress was originally built in the 11th century with a quadrangular structure, four corner towers, an inner courtyard with a rainwater cistern, and a drawbridge. Today, only the stone access bridge and scattered stretches of the surrounding walls remain, as the structure underwent significant modifications after 1464 when the Knights Hospitaller left the village and it passed from the hands of the Caracciolo princes.
The medieval village of Monasterace Superiore can be accessed through three gates: Porta Marina (the east gate and main entrance), the south gate (which is better preserved), and a more modern gate called 'tripu.' These gates provided controlled access to the fortified village throughout its history.
The village was established on higher ground in the 8th century BC when coastal populations migrated inland following a malaria epidemic that spread after the destruction of the ancient colony of Kaulon by Saracens. The elevated position also provided better defense against Byzantine attacks, necessitating the construction of protective fortress walls and towers around the settlement.
