About Wadi Mujib: The Water Canyon of Jordan

Wadi Mujib: The Water Canyon of Jordan - 35 | Secret World Trip Planner

The water reaches your thighs before you have even walked a hundred meters. The red sandstone walls close in around you until they narrow to just a few meters wide, and the sound of the Mujib River's current fills every available sound space. This is Wadi Mujib, a slot canyon carved by the Mujib River in the escarpment of the Dead Sea, in the western part of Jordan, not far from the Al-Maghir area. This is not a traditional hike: it is a water canyoning experience where you walk, swim, and climb through narrow gorges dotted with waterfalls, with the water as a constant companion.

The Wadi Mujib Nature Reserve is managed by the Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature (RSCN) of Jordan and is considered the lowest nature reserve in the world, as the canyon descends to about 410 meters below sea level before flowing into the Dead Sea. This exceptional geographical location creates a humid and lush microclimate, in stark contrast to the surrounding arid landscape. The canyon walls, towering at certain points dozens of meters high, display geological layers that tell millions of years of Earth's history, visible to the naked eye as you progress through the water.

The Siq Trail: the heart of the experience

The main trail that runs through the canyon is called Siq Trail and covers about 2 kilometers of one-way water path. The average duration is two to three hours, depending on physical fitness and water level. The trail starts from the visitor center on the shores of the Dead Sea and flows upstream through increasingly narrow gorges, until reaching a main waterfall where many visitors stop before turning back. It is not possible to complete the trail in the opposite direction: the direction is mandatory and the reserve guides enforce it strictly.

Physically, the canyon offers scenery that changes meter by meter. At certain points, light filters from above in oblique beams, coloring the water emerald green. In others, the walls almost touch and one walks in total twilight. The rocks are smoothed by the water and take on sinuous, almost organic shapes. Some waterfalls require swimming through deep pools while holding onto fixed ropes installed by the reserve. It is an authentic physical experience, not suitable for those with mobility difficulties or a fear of water.

How to get there and practical information

The Wadi Mujib visitor center is located on the Dead Sea Highway (Route 65), about 90 kilometers south of Amman. The road runs alongside the Dead Sea and the access point is clearly marked. There is no direct public transport: the most common solution is to rent a car in Amman or arrange a private transfer. The journey takes about an hour and a half from the Jordanian capital.

The entrance ticket for the Siq Trail, including the mandatory rental of the life jacket, is around 21 Jordanian dinars per person (about 27 euros), but it is advisable to check the updated rates directly on the RSCN website before departing. The best season to visit is between April and October, when the canyon is open to the public. During the winter months, the trail is closed due to the risk of sudden floods. Even in summer, heavy rains can cause sudden closures: always check the weather conditions before departing.

What to bring and what to expect

Leave in the car everything you don't want to get wet. Phone, camera, and documents should be placed in waterproof bags or left at the visitor center, which offers lockers. The shoes to wear must have non-slip soles and fit well on the foot: open sandals are not suitable. Many visitors choose lightweight hiking shoes that can get wet without problems.

The life jacket is mandatory for all visitors and is provided by the reserve upon entry. It is non-negotiable, even for those who can swim. The water in Mujib is cool even in the height of summer, a very pleasant feeling considering that the outside temperature can exceed 35 degrees. Bringing enough drinking water is essential: there are no refill points inside the canyon.

The natural context of the reserve

In addition to the main canyon, the Wadi Mujib reserve hosts several other hiking trails of varying difficulty, some of which do not require entering the water. The biodiversity of the area is remarkable: the reserve is home to species such as the now extremely rare Arabian leopard, and numerous species of migratory birds that use the valley as a corridor during seasonal movements.

The proximity to the Dead Sea adds a unique element to the visit: after the adrenaline of the canyon, many tourists move a few kilometers to the shores of the Dead Sea to float in the hypersaline waters, ending the day with a completely different but equally memorable experience. Two extreme environments, just a few minutes apart: this is one of the most surprising aspects of this corner of Jordan.
