Welcome to Sicily's First Nature Reserve - SP63 | Secret World Trip Planner

A path filled with wonders awaits at the Zingaro Nature Reserve, a place that captivates right from the start. Just the name, Zingaro, evokes a sense of adventure, as you traverse a coastal trail nestled between lush greenery and the dazzling blue and white of hidden coves.

Northern Entrance, San Vito Lo Capo Side

The Zingaro Nature Reserve stretches over seven kilometers of pristine nature, from San Vito Lo Capo to Castellammare del Golfo. Remarkably, it is one of the few reserves in Sicily that has no coastal road, despite initial plans to build one. The sheer beauty of the area and the determination of those who fought to keep it untouched led to the suspension of construction and the withdrawal of funding. Zingaro is, therefore, a testament to the love of its people—a shared love that we honor by respecting its natural laws as we visit.

Whether you begin your journey from San Vito Lo Capo or Castellammare del Golfo, the breathtaking landscape of the Reserve will accompany you every step of the way. And even if you can’t manage the entire hike—about four hours in total—it hardly matters, as extraordinary views greet you at every turn. The Reserve covers 1,650 hectares of limestone terrain along a coastal strip characterized by rugged cliffs interspersed with numerous coves.

Cala dell'Uzzo: A Jewel of the Zingaro Reserve

The Zingaro Reserve is a stunning natural habitat where rock and sea, stone and water, come together to create a vibrant yet soothing palette of colors. The coves, with their green-blue waters and white pebble beaches, are refreshingly cool retreats during the summer, stretching from the entrance at San Vito Lo Capo to Castellammare del Golfo. Among them, Tonnarella dell’Uzzo, Cala dell’Uzzo, Cala Marinella, Cala Berretta, Cala della Disa, Cala del Varo, and Cala Capreria stand out as must-see spots.

The underwater landscape is equally diverse, featuring various forms and colors. Cystoseira algae attest to the purity of the waters, while Lithothamnion tortuosum, a fringed red algae, adds to the underwater tapestry. The seabed also hosts brown algae and floral-like creatures such as anemones, sea roses, and madrepores. The waters of the Reserve are home to colorful wrasses and blennies, as well as the Trochus vermetus, a mollusk with a tubular shell that blends with the limestone, creating a unique shoreline.

The Reserve is also rich in submerged caves and tunnels, such as the Grotta del Colombaccio, which opens into a spacious 30-meter chamber, and other notable caves like the Grotta della Corvina, Grotta della Capreria, Grotta della Mustia, and Grotta della Ficarella. This makes the Zingaro Reserve a paradise for snorkeling enthusiasts.

The Zingaro Nature Reserve features a wide variety of environments with great natural interest. Not far from the Reserve, Monte Cofano stands tall and majestic, an isolated guardian of this incredible beauty.

The most widespread vegetation in the Reserve is dwarf palm, which in some areas is dense, while in others, it gives way to a landscape dominated by ephemeral grasslands, rosemary, carob, myrtle, and almond trees. You'll also find beautiful blooms, such as Sicilian cornflowers, orchids, and rockrose.

A multitude of animal species inhabit the Reserve. The Bonelli’s eagle, a species in decline, regularly breeds here, laying one or two eggs, alongside other birds of prey like the barn owl and the little owl. Seagulls skim the water, great tits flit among the shrubs, and the tiny wren chirps in the underbrush.

While the Reserve primarily attracts visitors who are passionate about its crystal-clear waters, Zingaro is also beloved by trekking and hiking enthusiasts, particularly during the milder seasons.

As you wander through the shrubs and paths, you'll come across not only rural settlements but also five small museums worth visiting: the Museum of Maritime Activities, the Museum of Peasant Civilization, the Museum of Weaving, the Manna Museum, and the Natural History Museum. These are ideal stops in autumn or spring, places of ancient memory that preserve local heritage. These gems, set within a stunning landscape, deserve the full attention of any traveler.
