The trail begins in Ghandruk, a Gurung village at about 1,940 meters above sea level, with its stone and slate houses arranged in terraces on the mountainside. From here, the path to the Annapurna Base Camp winds through rhododendron forests, agricultural terraces, and villages where life flows according to ancient rhythms. The Annapurna massif, with its main peak reaching 8,091 meters, is visible at times through the vegetation, becoming more prominent as one gains altitude.
The trek to Annapurna Base Camp, often abbreviated as ABC, is one of the most frequented routes in Nepal, but it maintains an authentic quality that is hard to find elsewhere. It is not a stroll: the base camp is located at 4,130 meters above sea level, and the elevation gain over the days of walking challenges even trained hikers. Yet it is precisely this physical progression, combined with the continuous transformation of the landscape, that makes the journey memorable.
From Ghandruk to the Annapurna Sanctuary
Starting from Ghandruk, one crosses the village of Chomrong, at about 2,170 meters, considered one of the last inhabited centers before entering the so-called Annapurna Sanctuary, the natural sanctuary enclosed between the walls of the massif. Chomrong is also the point where the ACAP permit, the Annapurna Conservation Area Project, is stamped, which is necessary to proceed. The village offers well-equipped teahouses and a direct view of Annapurna South.
After Chomrong, the trail descends steeply towards the Chomrong Khola stream and then ascends towards Sinuwa and Bamboo, where the vegetation changes radically: the forests of rhododendrons and bamboo give way to more alpine landscapes. The temperatures drop significantly, and in the evening hours, it is common to find fog and humidity. Park signs remind trekkers not to leave waste and to respect the local wildlife, which includes snow leopards and musk deer, although sightings are rare.
The landscape that changes with altitude
After passing the village of Deurali, at about 3,230 meters, the panorama opens up suddenly. The rocky walls of Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, and Machhapuchhre, the characteristic fish-tail shaped mountain that reaches 6,993 meters, surround the hiker on multiple sides. Machhapuchhre is considered sacred by Nepalese tradition and climbing it is not allowed: this protection has preserved its shape intact and unspoiled, making it one of the most recognizable scenes in the entire Himalayan region.
As one approaches the base camp, the terrain becomes drier and the vegetation almost disappears. One walks on glacial moraines and scree, with the Annapurna glacier clearly visible. At dawn, when the light hits the ice and rock walls, the colors shift from orange to deep pink in just a few minutes. Many trekkers choose to arrive at the base camp in the afternoon and stay overnight just to witness this spectacle the following morning.
What to encounter along the way
Throughout the journey, the teahouses offer food and accommodation at affordable prices: a night in a double room generally costs between 5 and 15 dollars, while a full meal ranges from 4 to 10 dollars, with variations related to altitude. The menus offer everything from dal bhat, the traditional Nepalese dish made of rice and lentils, to pasta, soups, and omelets. The quality of the food slightly decreases with the increase in altitude, where supplies arrive by mule or are carried by porters.
The Gurung and Magar populations that inhabit the villages along the route maintain their own cultural traditions, with Buddhist monasteries, colorful prayer flags, and stone stupas along the path. In Ghandruk, there is also a small Gurung museum that documents the history and culture of this community, with traditional objects and period photographs.
Practical tips for tackling trekking
The best time for trekking to Annapurna Base Camp is October-November, when the monsoon has ended and the skies are generally clear. Spring, between March and May, is the second ideal season, with rhododendrons in bloom. During the monsoon, from June to August, the trails become slippery and landslides are frequent: many sections may be closed or dangerous.
To access the area, it is necessary to purchase two permits: the TIMS card (Trekkers' Information Management System) and the ACAP permit. Both can be obtained in Pokhara, the starting city reachable from Kathmandu in about six hours by bus or 25 minutes by flight. From Pokhara, you take a vehicle to Nayapul or directly to Ghandruk, reducing the approach time. The complete trek to the base camp and back takes on average 7-10 days, depending on the pace and the chosen route. Bringing medication for altitude sickness and acclimatizing progressively is essential to avoid serious problems above 3,500 meters.
