Roman Ruins of PisõesPertaining the Hellenistic style of the Roman Villa of Pisões, these ruins are located in Herdade da Almagrassa, about 10 km southwest of the city of Beja, and were found accidentally, in 1967, during agricultural work. Archaeological excavations and studies carried out in the Ruins, which have so far been partially excavated, confirm that the villa was occupied between the 1st and 4th centuries AD. The owners' residential area is the heritage that, until now, has undergone the most studies. It would be a dwelling with more than forty rooms with compartments essentially characterized by its decorative wealth. Tanks, swimming pool and baths of appreciable dimensions, would also exist in this property, taking advantage of the proximity of the Pisões dam, constituting even, the thermal building, one of the most relevant examples of Roman private baths found in Portuguese territory. All the existing mosaics in the Roman Ruins of Pisões is truly remarkable, with pieces of great quality, geometric and naturalistic compositions, from monochrome mosaics to polychromed. A real treasure in Lusitanian lands.
There is a permanent exhibition on the site at the Welcome and Interpretation Centre, organised in a thematic way, and the route of the visit is also duly signposted. For visitors with reduced mobility there are some sections of the visit route that may present difficulties. The access is made through a dirt road, from the village of Penedo Gordo for about 4km. Closed on Mondays and holidays of January 1st, Easter Sunday, May 1st and December 25th.
