Juste à l'extérieur de St. Louis, de l'autre côté de la frontière de l'État, se trouve le Cahokia Mounds State Historic Park. Les Cahokia Mounds sont un site fascinant formé par les Amérindiens qui y vivaient il y a plus de 800 ans. On pense que ces monticules représentent la plus grande ville précolombienne au nord du Mexique.
Il reste 69 monticules qui sont aujourd'hui recouverts d'herbe. Le plus grand de ces monticules est le Monks Mound, qui mesure plus de 30 mètres de haut. Une autre partie intéressante de Cahokia est Woodhenge, un grand cercle formé par 48 poteaux en bois qui s'aligne sur le calendrier solaire, ce qui le rend très similaire à Stonehenge en Angleterre.
