The Borgo è perched on the slopes of the Gran Sasso and è dominated by the immense Campo Imperatore plateau, called by many the "Little Tibet". The municipal territory è included in the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park area. Its proximity to the rich pastures of the plateau have always favored livestock farming, which has survived even the demise of transhumance. The ancient practice of herding forged a lineage of shepherds and created a solid and famous dairy tradition, which è remained intact over the centuries. Ricotta and cheeses from Castel del Monte were, in fact, highly appreciated and sought after already in the days of ancient Rome. In the past, during the long winter period and in the solitude of the mountain pastures, artisans and shepherds were masters of wood carving, hollowing out objects of use with rustic decorations. Today the hamlet è has become a popular tourist center, especially in the summer months.
