About Church of Saints John and Paul

Church of Saints John and Paul - Spoleto | Secret World Trip Planner

Almost hidden is instead the church of Saints John and Paul, so that we do not recognize it until we are just in front of the old entrance. The church is directly connected to the Travaglini palace, in the Byzantine quarter of Spoleto. This connection was strategic for the noble Travaglini family that through an internal passage could directly reach a reserved box to attend the functions. The church was built in the twelfth century in Romanesque style and its dimensions, as well as the structure, are quite modest. Externally it appears as a wall of stones on which it has been obtained a small porch to protect the fresco Madonna with child and four saints of the thirteenth century. On the high right a narrow street climbs toward the center of Spoleto and is crossed by two small arches placed at the beginning and at the end of the church. Inside the church of Saints John and Paul, with a single nave, there are frescoes painted between the twelfth and sixteenth centuries. Here there is also the crypt to which however it is not possible to enter, which was obtained by revising an older Roman building. Exterior of the church of Saints John and Paul - Spoleto The real façade, however, is located just between the two arches at the beginning of the staircase. Here the entrance door is surmounted by an extremely small rose window. Access to the church of Santi Giovanni e Paolo is unfortunately not always possible.
