About Church of Santa Maria degli Angeli

Church of Santa Maria degli Angeli - Nocera Inferiore | Secret World Trip Planner

The Franciscan Church and Convent of Santa Maria degli Angeli, known as San Francesco al Campo, is a religious building belonging to the forania of Nocera Superiore-Roccapiemonte. The church and the convent are in the territory of Nocera Superiore. Although it is a parish of Nocera Superiore, it is often mistakenly indicated as the "church of San Francesco" of Nocera Inferiore. The convent was built in 1589, the year in which the Chapter of the Cathedral of Nocera donated to Father Girolamo Villani a piece of land of his property, with the old building of the Church of Santa Maria a Torre attached, so called because it was near a tower of the ancient Roman walls (let's not forget that under the cellars of the present convent there are the ascertained remains of part of the ancient Amphitheatre, which was enlarged after the one in Pompeii was "disqualified" because of the brawl between Pompeians and Nocerini!). The church of Santa Maria a Torre was enlarged and took the name of Santa Maria degli Angeli. From the enlargement of a pre-existing church was built the church we see today. Perhaps the most beautiful part of the whole building, is the beautiful cloister in which the arcades are frescoed by the school of Francesco Solimena, while the courtyard in the center is adorned with well-kept plants that provide a beautiful atmosphere of tranquility and peace. Entering the church you immediately tend to look up, to enjoy the beautiful frescoed ceilings. The two naves are characterized by many arches that contain valuable works of art. Beautiful also the high altar and the pipe organ placed above the entrance.

Frequently Asked Questions

The convent was established in 1589 when the Cathedral Chapter of Nocera donated land and an old church called Santa Maria a Torre to Father Girolamo Villani. The original church was enlarged and renamed Santa Maria degli Angeli, and interestingly, the convent's cellars contain remains of an ancient Roman amphitheatre that was expanded after Pompeii's amphitheatre was damaged during a brawl between Pompeians and Nocerini.
The church features beautifully frescoed ceilings that visitors immediately notice upon entering, along with two naves characterized by numerous arches containing valuable works of art. The interior also highlights a beautiful high altar and an ornate pipe organ positioned above the entrance.
Yes, the cloister is arguably the most beautiful part of the entire building, featuring arcades frescoed by the school of Francesco Solimena. The central courtyard is adorned with well-maintained plants that create a serene and peaceful atmosphere, making it a tranquil retreat within the complex.
Although the Church of Santa Maria degli Angeli is a parish of Nocera Superiore and located in its territory, it is often mistakenly referred to as the 'church of San Francesco' of Nocera Inferiore. The confusion likely stems from the Franciscan origins of the church and the proximity of the two towns.
Beneath the cellars of the present convent lie confirmed remains of part of an ancient Roman amphitheatre that was enlarged after the amphitheatre in Pompeii became unusable following a violent conflict between Pompeians and Nocerini. These archaeological remains make the site particularly significant from a historical perspective.
