Looking up at the ceiling of the Debre Birhan Selassie church means suddenly finding oneself surrounded by 135 faces of angels painted on wooden panels, arranged in orderly rows that cover every inch of the vault. It is not a gradual effect: it is an immediate visual impact, almost dizzying, that catches the visitor as soon as they enter the rectangular stone and straw building. Each face is different from the others — large dark eyes, curly hair, expressions that range from solemnity to an almost childlike curiosity. This ceiling is the reason why people travel hundreds of kilometers to reach Gondar.
The church is located within a walled enclosure in the northern part of the city of Gondar, in northwestern Ethiopia, at about 2,300 meters above sea level on the Ethiopian plateau. It was built in the 17th century, during the reign of Emperor Iyasu I, one of the most influential rulers of the Solomonid dynasty, who reigned from 1682 to 1706. The current structure is considered by scholars to be one of the best-preserved Ethiopian Orthodox churches in the country, having survived — according to local tradition — the attack of the Sudanese Mahdi forces in 1888, when all other religious buildings in Gondar were set ablaze. It is said that a swarm of bees drove back the soldiers before they could set fire to the enclosure.
The architecture: a simple structure that hides a world
Seen from the outside, Debre Birhan Selassie does not betray the wealth it holds. The stone perimeter walls with twelve circular towers — symbolizing the twelve apostles — surround a garden shaded by juniper trees. The church itself is a rectangular building with three naves, featuring the sloping thatched roof typical of Ethiopian religious architecture of the period. The external facade is sober, almost austere. Nothing truly prepares you for what is inside.
The interior is divided according to the tradition of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church: an outer vestibule accessible to common worshippers, an intermediate area, and the Holy of Holies, the sancta sanctorum where the tabot — the replica of the Ark of the Covenant — is kept, accessible only to priests. Non-Orthodox visitors can observe the first two areas, where most of the murals are concentrated. In addition to the famous ceiling, the walls are decorated with vivid biblical scenes: the Trinity, the Virgin Mary, Ethiopian saints, battles between angels and demons. The dominant colors are ochre red, yellow, black, and white, obtained with natural pigments.
The paintings: a precise and coded visual language
The 135 angelic faces of the ceiling are not merely decorative: in Ethiopian Orthodox theology, angels are mediators between the human and divine worlds, and their massive presence above the heads of the faithful during prayer has a precise liturgical meaning. Each angel is depicted with two visible wings and two that conceal the body — an iconographic convention that directly refers to the book of Isaiah. Scholars of Ethiopian art date most of the internal frescoes to the period of Iyasu I, although some painting interventions were made in later times.
On the side walls, one of the most photographed scenes stands out clearly: the face of Saint George slaying the dragon, the patron saint of Ethiopia, painted with a narrative vitality reminiscent of certain medieval European miniatures. Next to it, scenes of the Passion of Christ and portraits of local saints — some identifiable by the captions in Ge'ez, the Ethiopian liturgical language — complete a pictorial cycle that functions as an illustrated Bible for illiterate believers.
How to visit: practical tips for organizing
Gondar can be reached by plane from Addis Ababa with daily flights operated by Ethiopian Airlines, with a duration of about an hour and a half. The church is a few kilometers from the city center and can be easily reached by tuk-tuk or taxi. Entrance is paid — the ticket price is around 200 Ethiopian birr for foreign visitors, a figure subject to change — and includes access to the enclosure and the church.
The best time to visit is early morning, between 7:30 and 9:00, when natural light enters through the small side windows and illuminates the ceiling without the interference of artificial lights. On Orthodox holidays — particularly during the celebrations of Timkat (Ethiopian Epiphany, in January) — the church is animated by singing, drums, and ceremonies that offer a completely different but extraordinary experience. However, on those days, the influx of worshippers makes it difficult to closely observe the paintings. Bringing a small flashlight can be useful to illuminate the darker details of the side walls, and remember to take off your shoes before entering, as required by tradition.
