Goldoni Theater - Corinaldo | Secret World Trip Planner

he realization of the small Theater of the Dawning Sun can be traced back to the years between 1736 and 1752 according to the architectural project of Angelo Birza from Fabriano. Originally with a U-shaped plan on three orders, it was later enlarged and remained in activity until 1869, when it was replaced by the new Goldoni Theater. The project of the latter was entrusted to the engineer Crescentino Quagliani who modified the curve and simplified and trivialized the previous harmonious distributive solutions, retaining the merit of the invention of the original device for lifting the stalls on a level with the stage, still working today. The project was completed with the decorations in November 1867 and the stage equipment in September 1869. The final structure was that of a horseshoe plan with a well of thirty-eight boxes on three orders plus the balconied gallery. The six proscenium boxes were added later.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Goldoni Theater was completed in 1867-1869 and was designed by engineer Crescentino Quagliani. It replaced the earlier Theater of the Dawning Sun, which had operated since the 1730s-1750s, making Goldoni the newer and more sophisticated venue for performances.
The theater features a distinctive horseshoe-shaped layout with thirty-eight boxes arranged on three orders, plus a balconied gallery and six additional proscenium boxes. A notable original feature is the ingenious device for lifting the stalls to the same level as the stage, which was invented in the earlier theater and is still functioning today.
The site originally held the Theater of the Dawning Sun, designed by Angelo Birza from Fabriano and built between 1736-1752 with a U-shaped plan on three orders. This theater remained active until 1869 when it was demolished and replaced by the new Goldoni Theater with modernized architectural solutions.
The decorations for the Goldoni Theater were completed in November 1867, while the stage equipment was finished in September 1869, showing that the final details and technical installations took several years to perfect before the theater's full operation.
While Crescentino Quagliani modified the curved layout and simplified some of the previous theater's distributive solutions, he retained the merit of the innovative lifting device for the stalls. His design resulted in the practical horseshoe-shaped configuration that still defines the theater today.
