Families, with their livestock in tow, huddled in the constant 10-degree warmth of the grottos, finding solace and safety from the brutal winter and the war outside.

Perched between the communes of Lama dei Peligni and Taranta Peligna, the caves can be reached by a scenic cable car ride that ascends from 758 meters to 1,388 meters above sea level. Once you disembark, a short walk and a climb of about 180 steps bring you to the entrance of the caves. For those driving, the caves are accessible via the A14 highway, exiting at Val di Sangro and continuing towards Casoli and Lama dei Peligni, or via the A25, exiting at Sulmona and heading towards Roccaraso and Lama dei Peligni.
