The ground trembles slightly under your feet, the air smells of sulfur, and in front of you opens one of the most active craters on the planet. Welcome to the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, on the island of Hawaii, where the earth is not a fixed entity but something that transforms before your eyes. The park, established in 1916, covers over 1,300 square kilometers and hosts two of the most studied volcanoes in the world: Mauna Loa and Kīlauea.
Kīlauea is the undisputed star. Considered one of the most active volcanoes on Earth, it has been in almost continuous eruption for decades — with occasional breaks — and has reshaped the southern coast of the island with lava flows that have added new land to the ocean. It is not a distant and abstract spectacle: here you can get close to the edge of the Halemaʻumaʻu crater, watch the glowing lava lake, and understand, viscerally, what it means to witness the birth of the world.
The Halemaʻumaʻu Crater and the Kīlauea Caldera
The mandatory starting point is the Kīlauea Visitor Center, where rangers update volcanic conditions daily and indicate accessible areas. From here, the Crater Rim Drive — a scenic road that runs along the caldera — leads to the viewpoint of the Halemaʻumaʻu crater. During active eruption phases, at night the orange glow of the lava lake illuminates the vapors rising from the crater: a spectacle unlike anything you may have seen before.
The Kīlauea caldera measures about 4 kilometers in diameter and reaches 120 meters in depth at some points. Walking along the edge, you can see cracks in the ground, fumaroles emitting white vapors, and surfaces of solidified black lava contrasting with the green of the surrounding vegetation. The geology here is not something to study in books: it is literally under your feet.
Thurston Lava Tube: inside a lava tunnel
One of the most accessible and surprising paths in the park is the Thurston Lava Tube, also known as Nāhuku. It is a natural tunnel formed when the outer crust of a lava flow solidified while the lava inside continued to flow, emptying the conduit. The main tunnel is about 170 meters long and is artificially lit, making the visit possible even without a flashlight.
Walking inside is a unique sensory experience: the walls display streaks of colored minerals, the rocks shine with moisture, and the ceiling retains the wavy shapes left by the moving lava. The circular path leading to the tube passes through a forest of tree ferns, with trunks covered in moss and an almost absolute silence that contrasts with the dramatic volcanic landscape outside.
Chain of Craters Road: towards the ocean on a sea of lava
The Chain of Craters Road descends for about 32 kilometers from the edge of the caldera to the Pacific coast, crossing expanses of solidified lava that look like a black ocean frozen in time. Along the road, one encounters numerous minor craters, ancient Hawaiian petroglyphs — carved into the lava by the island's original inhabitants — and signs of recent flows that have submerged sections of the road itself.
At the end of the road, where the lava has reached the sea in the past, the landscape is lunar: no vegetation, just black rock and the sound of waves. At certain times, when volcanic activity allows, it is possible to observe the lava reaching the ocean, creating columns of white steam visible from kilometers away. Rangers communicate daily whether this spectacle is accessible and safe.
Practical tips for visiting the park
The entrance ticket to the park costs 35 dollars per vehicle and is valid for 7 days. The park is open 24 hours a day, and this is an important detail: the best time to visit the Halemaʻumaʻu crater is at sunset or at night, when the glow of the lava is visible to the naked eye. During the day, the brightness significantly reduces the spectacle.
Bring plenty of water, sturdy closed-toe shoes, and layered clothing: the temperature varies significantly between the caldera rim, which is about 1,200 meters above sea level, and the coast. Volcanic gas emissions — the so-called vog, an acidic mist — can be bothersome for those with respiratory issues: check the weather conditions before you leave and, if necessary, wear a mask. The rangers are the park's most valuable resource: do not hesitate to ask them where volcanic activity is most intense on the day of your visit.
