At a 3,000 meters above sea level, the Jabal Akhdar plateau — literally "the green mountain" in Arabic — stands out sharply from the arid landscape that surrounds it. Climbing from Al Hamra along the road that cuts through the rocky walls of the Western Hajar, the change in atmosphere is immediate: the air cools by several degrees, the ochre-colored rocks give way to cultivated terraces and, in spring, to expanses of damask roses that perfume the villages of Saiq and Ash Shirayjah.
The Jabal Akhdar is part of the Al Hajar mountain range, which runs through northern Oman, and its main plateau — known as Saiq Plateau — can only be reached by a four-wheel-drive vehicle, a requirement imposed by Omani authorities at the military checkpoint at the base of the mountain. This filter has helped preserve the authentic character of the summit villages, where stone houses cling to the edges of wadis that are hundreds of meters deep.
The colors of dawn over the wadi
At dawn, when the slanting light hits the vertical walls of the Wadi Ghul — often referred to as the Grand Canyon of Arabia for its depth exceeding 1,000 meters — the rocks take on a color range that goes from burnt orange to dark purple in the areas still in shadow. From the viewpoint near the abandoned village of Al Ghul, accessible with a short walk from the main parking lot, one can observe the entire sequence of geological layers that make up the canyon walls: bands of light limestone alternating with darker rocks, visible to the naked eye without the need for equipment.
The early hours of the morning are also the time when local farmers work in the terraces, still irrigated today through a system of falaj — traditional water channels that UNESCO recognized as a World Heritage Site in 2006. Seeing the water flow along these channels carved into the rock, while the sun illuminates the terraces of pomegranates and walnuts, is one of those details that cannot be found in promotional photographs.
The blooming of damask roses in spring
Between late March and mid-April, the villages of the plateau fill with the fragrance of the Damask rose, the variety cultivated here for centuries to produce rose water and essential oil. The roses are hand-picked in the early hours of the morning, when the concentration of essential oils is at its maximum, and distilled in small artisanal facilities present in the villages. In Ash Shirayjah, it is possible to observe the distillation process and purchase directly from the producers the Omani rose water, which differs in intensity from that found in the markets of coastal cities.
During the blooming, the terraces that at other times of the year appear as simple rows of low bushes transform into bands of intense pink that contrast with the gray of the rock and the often clear sky at that altitude. The afternoon light, warmer and more lateral compared to that of noon, enhances this color combination particularly effectively between 3:00 PM and 5:00 PM.
The Sunset and the Starry Night
At sunset, the colors change rapidly. The rocky walls of the wadi shift from gold to brick red in just a few minutes, while the shadows stretch across the canyon floor, making it seem like a bottomless abyss. The Milky Way is visible to the naked eye on moonless nights, and the temperature often drops below 10°C even in summer, making layered clothing necessary, which many visitors from the coastal cities of Oman underestimate.
Practical tips for the visit
The military checkpoint at the base of the mountain checks that every vehicle is 4x4 all-wheel drive: there are no exceptions and it is not possible to rent a suitable vehicle on site, so it is necessary to organize before departing from Muscat or Nizwa. The road from Nizwa to the plateau takes about an hour of driving, with steep sections and tight curves. The best time to visit is from October to April, when temperatures on the plateau range from 10°C to 22°C; in summer, the mountain is frequented by Omanis themselves to escape the heat of the coast, but accommodation prices increase significantly.
