In March, when the Dutch winter still yields a few degrees of cold, the first tulips sprout from the bulbs planted in the previous months by dozens of gardeners. By April, the 32 hectares of Keukenhof in Lisse, in the heart of the Bulb region between Amsterdam and The Hague, transform into something difficult to describe without falling into hyperbole: stripes of red, yellow, purple, and orange so vivid they seem painted, visible even from the aerial photographs that circulate every season on social media.
Keukenhof opens its doors each year only for a period of about eight weeks, usually from mid-March to mid-May, after which it closes until the following spring. This very narrow time window is an integral part of its charm: it cannot be postponed, it cannot be returned to in summer. Either you are there at that moment, or you wait a whole year.
A story that begins in the Fifteenth century
The name Keukenhof — literally kitchen garden — dates back to the 15th century, when the area was a farm estate that provided herbs and vegetables to the castle of Countess Jacoba of Bavaria. The transformation into an ornamental park occurred much later: in 1949, a group of Dutch bulb producers decided to use the land as a permanent showcase for their varieties. The goal was commercial — to show international buyers the quality of the bulbs grown in the region — but the result quickly became something much larger.
The original landscaping project was entrusted to the landscape architects Zocher, the same family that designed Amsterdam's Vondelpark in the 19th century. The romantic setting of the park, with its winding paths, ponds, and groves of ancient trees, is still perfectly legible as one walks among the flower beds. It is one of those rare cases where the original design has withstood decades of modifications and additions.

The most cited fact — over seven million bulbs planted every autumn by a team of specialized gardeners — becomes tangible only when standing in front of a flower bed of tulips standing forty centimeters tall, perfectly aligned by color and variety. The labels indicate the name of each cultivar: it is discovered that there are tulips with fringed petals, parrot tulips with green streaks, and double tulips that resemble peonies.
In addition to tulips, which dominate the collective imagination, the park hosts daffodils, hyacinths, muscari, and fritillaries. The hyacinths in particular release a fragrance that can be sensed from a distance, especially in the morning hours when the air is still fresh. Along the tree-lined avenues, ornamental cherry trees and magnolias also bloom, adding a vertical level to the chromatic spectacle of the low flower beds.
How to Organize Your Visit Smartly
The most useful advice for those planning a visit is just one: arrive at opening time, around 8:00 in the morning. In the first two hours, the park is still relatively quiet, the light is soft and ideal for photography, and the paths are not yet crowded. From 10:30 onwards, especially on weekends in April, the influx of visitors — the park welcomes about one and a half million each season — makes some areas difficult to navigate calmly.
Entrance tickets are purchased exclusively online in advance, and the price is around 19-22 euros for adults (always check the official website for the updated rate for the current season). To reach Lisse from Amsterdam, the most practical solution is the direct Keukenhof Express bus that departs from Schiphol station: the journey takes about thirty minutes and the combined bus plus entrance ticket is often convenient. Avoid coming by your own car on weekends: the parking lots fill up quickly and the exit queues can be long.
The right time to see the tulips at their best
The blooming is not uniform throughout the entire opening period. Hyacinths and daffodils tend to be at their peak in the early weeks, in mid-March. Tulips generally reach their peak in the second and third weeks of April, although the weather conditions of each year can advance or delay this moment by a few days. Those who can afford flexibility on weekdays will find a significantly more intimate experience. A Tuesday morning in mid-April, with the low sun and hyacinths still in full bloom, is probably the best way to understand why this place, despite the industrial numbers of visitors, continues to thrive: because the beauty of the flowers is powerful enough to survive even the crowd.
