For Germans, Lake Constance is a real sea; in fact, another name for the lake is "Schwäbisches Meer" (Swabian Sea). The extent of the lake is remarkable: it has an east-west length of about 70 km, a maximum width of 15 km and a maximum depth of 252 m. Its surface area is 540 km2, that of Lake Garda - for comparison - is 370 km2. And like all "seas," it is equipped with its own fleet: the "Weiße Flotte" (White Fleet) makes it possible to reach all locations, not only Mainau, but also Meersburg, Überlingen, Schaffhausen (Schaffhausen), Lindau, Bregenz and Friedrichshafen. Mainau Island, is certainly a must-see destination for those visiting the lake area and its historical and natural attractions. Aided by the area's mild climate, the entire island is in fact a wonderful garden, popular with residents and visitors alike, inviting relaxation and enjoyment in close contact with nature. Unlike other parks in Switzerland and Europe, Mainau Island is open throughout the year. We chose to visit the island in spring, in April, when the daffodil and tulip bloom is at its peak, and we were fascinated by the beauty of the landscape and the thousands of colors that cover the meadows and flower beds. Our advice, therefore, is to plan your visit by April. But if for some reason this is not possible for you, never fear! Although it is at its best from March to September, the island wears a new look every season! In general, while as mentioned above April and May are the months of daffodils and tulips, the summer months are characterized by the blooming of rose gardens and Italian gardens while September is the month of dahlias. Summer is also a time full of cultural events and initiatives not to be missed. Mainau Island is a lake island but is connected by bridge to the mainland so it can be reached very easily. It is just a handful of kilometers from the city of Constance and a large parking lot offers convenient space for both those arriving by car and RV owners. For those arriving from the opposite side of the lake, it is advisable to take the ferry at Meersburg, loading the car on board.
