About Marmore Falls

Marmore Falls - Terni | Secret World Trip Planner

The Marmore Waterfall is an artificial work of hydraulic arrangement due to the Romans; the Velino River, in fact, widened in the years before 290 B.C. into a vast area of stagnant, swampy, unhealthy waters. For the purpose of draining these waters, the consul Curio Dentato had a canal dug to convey them to the cliff of Marmore, and from there they plunged, with a total leap of 165 meters, into the underlying bed of the Nera River.

Marmore Falls - Terni | Secret World Trip Planner

The spectacular leap of the Marmore Falls has inspired poets and artists from every historical period: Virgil in the "Aeneid," Cicero and G. Byron in the "Childe Harolds Pilgrimage." For about 50 years the waterfall's waters have been used to power the Galleto hydroelectric power plant. As a result, the waterfall can only be admired at designated times. The falls are among the highest in Europe, being able to count on a total drop of 165 m, divided into three jumps. It is located about 7.5 km away from Terni, Umbria, almost at the end of the Valnerina, the long valley carved by the Nera River. Its name comes from the calcium carbonate salts on the rocks, which are similar to white marble.

Frequently Asked Questions

For the past 50 years, the waterfall's waters have been diverted to power the Galleto hydroelectric plant, so the falls only flow during designated visiting times. This means you'll need to check the schedule in advance before planning your visit to see the spectacular cascade at its full strength.
Marmore Falls has a total drop of 165 meters, divided into three separate jumps, making it one of Europe's highest waterfalls. It's located about 7.5 kilometers from Terni in Umbria, Italy, positioned at the end of the Valnerina valley carved by the Nera River.
Marmore Falls is an artificial creation built by the Romans around 290 B.C., when consul Curio Dentato had a canal dug to drain swampy waters from the widened Velino River toward the cliff. The water then plunges dramatically into the underlying bed of the Nera River, creating the spectacular waterfall we see today.
The waterfall gets its name from the calcium carbonate salts deposited on the surrounding rocks, which give them a white appearance similar to marble (marmore in Italian). This distinctive coloring from the mineral deposits is what inspired the waterfall's elegant name.
Marmore Falls has inspired numerous literary figures throughout history, including the Roman poet Virgil in his 'Aeneid,' Cicero, and the English poet Lord Byron in 'Childe Harold's Pilgrimage.' The waterfall's dramatic beauty and historical significance have made it a muse for writers and artists across different centuries.
