Memorial to the Fallen of the Acqui Division

The Monument to the Italian Fallen of the Aqui Division is located at the end of the Argostoli Peninsula and honors the 136 officers who lost their lives during World War II.To reach the monument, one must follow the coastal road from the lighthouse at Aghii Theodori and ascend to Lassi, where signs for the site will be found.The Aqui Division, which was in Cephalonia during the war, decided to fight against the German militia instead of surrendering, but it did not receive Allied military support and thus held out only for a short time.On September 21, thinking it was protected by the Geneva Convention, the Division surrendered, but within two days, on September 25 and 26, all officers were shot.The monument, of considerable size, stands next to the grave where the bodies of the Italian officers were piled up, and on six plaques are the names of all the fallen.This event, which saw the deaths of thousands of Italians in Cephalonia, is still remembered today and resonates as one of the most heinous of the war.
