About Nimrod Fortress: Crusader Towers in the Golan

Nimrod Fortress: Crusader Towers in the Golan - מבצר | Secret World Trip Planner

From the top of a narrow and windy ridge in the Golan Heights, the broken towers of the Nimrod Fortress dominate a landscape that stretches to the snows of Mount Hermon and, on clear days, towards Lebanon. It is not just any ruin: it is one of the best-preserved medieval military complexes in the Middle East, built in the 13th century by the Crusaders and later expanded and transformed by the Ayyubids, the dynasty founded by Saladin. Walking among its walls means physically crossing the boundary between two architectural worlds that have overlapped stone by stone.

The Nimrod National Park — in Hebrew Nimrod HaGolan — is located near the village of Nimrod, in northern Israel, a few kilometers from Kiryat Shmona and the nature reserve of Mount Hermon. Access is managed by the Israel Nature and Parks Authority, and the entrance fee is around 28 shekels for adults, with reductions for children and seniors. The fortress extends about 420 meters in length along the ridge, an imposing size that makes a hurried visit impossible.

The origins: Crusaders and Ayyubids in comparison

The construction of the fortress began around 1228, during a period of intense tensions between the Crusader forces and the Muslim ones for control of the trade and military routes to Damascus. The original structure was erected to block the advance of the Crusaders from the coast inland, but control of the site changed hands several times during the 13th century. When the Ayyubids finally took control, they expanded and strengthened the defenses with a series of additional towers and underground corridors that can still be traversed today.

The architecture clearly reflects this dual heritage. The oldest sections show construction techniques typical of the Crusader period, with precisely squared local basalt blocks. The Ayyubid additions, on the other hand, introduce more refined decorative elements: pointed arches, ornamental niches, and inscriptions in Arabic carved directly into the stone, some of which are still legible. This stylistic layering is visible to the naked eye while walking along the perimeter of the walls.

Architecture: towers, passages, and details to observe

The eastern tower, known as the Tower of Nimrod or main tower, is the most imposing structure of the complex: it rises over several levels and is equipped with arrow slits designed for the use of bows and crossbows. Inside, a stone spiral staircase still leads to the top, from which there is a 360-degree view of the valley. The interior walls show traces of original plaster and, in some places, the marks left by the tools of medieval builders.

One of the most fascinating elements is the underground passages that connect different sections of the fortress. Some of these corridors are low enough to require bending down to pass through, and they retain the claustrophobic atmosphere of structures designed for defense and surprise. Bringing a flashlight or activating the phone's flashlight is essential for exploring these sections safely. On the western side of the complex, a 13th-century Arabic inscription is still partially visible on the stone, a direct testimony of the Ayyubid period.

How to visit: practical tips

The best time to visit the Nimrod Fortress is early in the morning, preferably between 8 and 10. At that time, the slanting light enhances the textures of the basalt stones and the temperatures are more bearable, especially in the summer months when the site can become very hot. The park generally opens at 8:00 and closes in the late afternoon, but it is always advisable to check the updated hours on the website of the Israel Nature and Parks Authority before departing.

To reach the fortress by car, take road 989 in the Golan Heights: the signs for the park are clearly visible. There is no direct and convenient public transport service, so a car is practically essential. Allow at least two and a half hours for a complete visit that includes the underground passages and the climb to the main tower. Hiking shoes with non-slip soles are highly recommended: the terrain is uneven and some sections are slippery. The site is less crowded compared to other Israeli national parks, which makes the experience significantly more peaceful and personal.

Why the trip is worth it

The Fortress of Nimrod does not offer reconstructions, models, or museum setups: it offers real stone, wind, and silence. The Crusader and Ayyubid walls are there, accessible without barriers, in a state of preservation that allows one to read the architecture directly. The Arabic inscriptions, the basalt stairs, the dark corridors are all elements that an attentive visitor can observe and touch without intermediaries.

For those interested in medieval military architecture or the history of the Crusades, this site offers a density of authentic details that is hard to find elsewhere in the region. The location on the Golan Heights adds a still-relevant geopolitical context, making the visit an experience that goes well beyond the simple aesthetic admiration of ancient ruins.
