Top of the World
The majestic Church of San Giacomo di Compostela, of the first half of the fifteenth century, commissioned by the Caballerio family and a place very dear to the citizens of Ostuni. It is the oldest church in Ostuni, and is located in the heart of the old town, not far from the Cathedral, on a side street. It is located along Via Bixio Continelli, almost huddled under a pontoon. It dates back to 1423 and was built on behalf of the Caballerio family originally from the city of Brindisi. Of great artistic interest is the archivolt with Gothic lines embroidered with floral and anthropomorphic motifs. We believe that the enormous decorative richness of this artifact deserves to be carefully observed by scholars of Gothic art also to interpret the allegorical elements that appear there. The interior offers few elements even for the modest dimensions of what was originally a family chapel. There are the coat of arms of the Caballerio family, two statues of Saints Cosmas and Damian, a finely worked stone altar, a canvas depicting Saint Irene from the first half of the 18th century. Outside the apse area, which can be seen along Viale Oronzo Quaranta, has a beautiful medieval lancet window.
