The aerial roots of the Ficus magnoloides have devoured the brick walls over the course of two centuries, enveloping them in a slow and relentless grip that transforms stone into something organic, almost alive. This is the first image that strikes anyone entering the Botanical Garden of Palermo: not a tidy and domesticated garden, but a place where nature has taken over with geological patience, leaving the visitor with the feeling of having arrived too late — or perhaps at just the right moment.
Founded in 1779 under the Bourbon reign and officially inaugurated in 1795, the Botanical Garden extends over approximately 10 hectares in the heart of Palermo, not far from the sea. The neoclassical complex that constitutes its entrance — the so-called Gymnasium, designed by the French architect Léon Dufourny — elegantly introduces what is, instead, anything but rational: a layered, dense, fragrant ecosystem that gathers over 12,000 plant species from every corner of the planet.
The ficus that swallow the walls
The beating heart of the garden is the large specimens of Ficus macrophylla — commonly known as Australian figs or magnolia figs — planted during the nineteenth century and now become the absolute protagonists of the landscape. Their aerial roots descend from the branches like tight ropes towards the ground, intertwine, bond with the walls, wrap around them, and incorporate them. Walking under their canopy is a physical experience even before it is visual: the air becomes cooler, the light filters differently, and the sense of scale is altered because the trunks reach sizes that one does not expect from a tree in an urban garden.
One of the most impressive specimens is located in the central area of the park and has a trunk circumference that exceeds 10 meters by a wide margin. Photographing it in its entirety is practically impossible: one must settle for fragments, details, the texture of the bark that absorbs the afternoon light in an almost theatrical way. It is one of those subjects that teach you to look differently.
A botanical journey across the continents
In addition to the ficus, the Botanical Garden hosts extraordinary collections of succulent plants, palms, cycads, and aquatic plants. The lotus pond is one of the most photographed spots: a circular body of water where the leaves of Victoria amazonica — the giant Amazonian water lily — float like green plates large enough to support the weight of a child. The blooming, when it occurs, is a brief nighttime event that few manage to witness live.
The section dedicated to Mediterranean and Sicilian plants offers a more familiar yet no less interesting context: centenary olive trees, carobs, aromatic plants typical of the Mediterranean scrub. It is useful to slow down here, read the identification tags — often available in Italian as well — and understand how many of the plants seen every day actually have very distant origins, having arrived in Sicily through centuries of trade and conquests.
The neoclassical structure and the historical context
The building of the Gymnasium, designed by Léon Dufourny at the end of the Eighteenth century, is one of the rare examples of French neoclassical architecture in Palermo. Its façade with Ionic columns leads to the garden with a solemnity that pleasantly contrasts with the vegetal chaos found just beyond. Inside, historical herbariums, scientific collections, and a botanical library are preserved: access to these sections is generally reserved for researchers and students, but the external structure is visible to all.
The Botanical Garden is still managed today by the University of Palermo, which ensures its scientific function alongside its tourist role. This dual role — a garden open to the public and a research institution — is felt in the atmosphere: it is not a theme park, it has no artificial attractions, and precisely for this reason, it maintains a rare quality of authenticity.

The best time to visit the Botanical Garden is in the early morning, preferably in the months of March, April, or October, when temperatures are mild and the light is favorable for photography. In summer, the heat can be intense, but the coverage of the ficus makes some areas surprisingly cool. Allowing at least 90 minutes for a complete visit is reasonable; those who want to linger in the succulent section or by the lily pond can easily reach two hours.
The entrance ticket costs around 6-8 euros for adults, with discounts for students and seniors over 65. The entrance is located on Via Lincoln, easily reachable on foot from the historic center or by public transport.
