About Piazza Unità d'Italia

Piazza Unità d'Italia - Trieste | Secret World Trip Planner

Piazza Unità d'Italia, the living room of Trieste, is the largest square in Europe overlooking the sea. It was originally called Piazza San Pietro, then Piazza Grande. It took on the name Piazza Unità when Trieste was annexed to the Kingdom of Italy after 1918. In 1955, when Trieste returned to Italy again with the dissolution of the Free Territory of Trieste, the square took its current name. The Piazza is beautiful during the day and becomes wonderful in the evening, with the illuminated buildings and blue lights on the pavement indicating where the old mandracchio (harbor) was located. From the Molo Audace the view becomes superlative. The impression is of being in the middle of the sea and at a single glance you embrace all the shores with monumental palaces from the Palazzo Carciotti, the Greek Orthodox church of San Nicolò, Teatro Verdi, Piazza Unità d'Italia, the Hotel Excelsior Palace,Palazzo del Governo and the Palazzo del Comune. An extraordinary view not to be missed.
