Top of the World
A thin peninsula stretching out towards the sea with a history carved in the shining whiteness of salt. This is how you could define Piran. A picturesque village kissed by the sea with a pretty little harbour and a charming old town, Piran is the pearl of Slovenian Istria. It is characterised by sorbet-coloured buildings, ranging from mint green to cream to salmon, and narrow, crooked streets designed to break the bura wind. The town - surrounded by seven gates that hint at its medieval origins - is entirely pedestrianised: stroll aimlessly and let yourself be captured by its most suggestive views. Piran is a really good idea for a weekend or day trip if you are in this part of Slovenia or on the border with Italy or, on your return, after a holiday in Croatia. The promenade is the gateway to the town, leading to the pretty Tartini Square. After parking your car at the entrance to Piran (entry to non-resident vehicles is forbidden), the splendid promenade along the port and the town's waterfront begins. Particularly suggestive at twilight and at sunset, when the sea lights up with colors that go from the intense yellow to the pink and to the violet, the waterfront hosts the numerous colored boats of the fishermen and the modern boats of the tourists. Some restaurants overlook the promenade, while, as you approach the city centre, the most popular seaside resorts give way to historical buildings which light up the waters at night. Strolling along the shore, you can continue until you get around the tip of the peninsula.
