Prossedi

Prossedi is located in Lazio in the province of Latina, is a town of 1238 inhabitants consists of the main town and the village of Pisterzo, about 12 km away. The town stands on a hill balcony overlooking the valley of Amaseno. Economically, Prossedi is rich in cultivations of vegetables, olive groves, vineyards. The territory is mostly hilly and mountainous, the only flat area is the one where the river Amaseno and some other springs emerge. The prossedano environment is characterized by the development of an extremely quiet life. To welcome you in the small historical centre and in the ancient walls of Prossedi are the war memorial and the big arch surmounted by a beautiful clock of the nineteenth century. The name of this arch is Porta Maggiore and its structure dates back to the eighteenth century. The village has a typical horseshoe shape and is characterized by houses and stone buildings where you can get lost and relax. Once you enter the village from Porta Maggiore you will find the Palazzo delle Carceri, built in 1807 by the architect Francesco Rust, commissioned by Prince Pietro Gabrielli. Further on, you will find the Church of S. Agata, the patron saint of the village, which is celebrated on February 5th. It is characterized by a Greek cross plan and is surmounted by a dome with four large pillars. The present structure was built ex-novo at the end of the XVIII century even if the church was first built around 1200. Inside there are representations of the Saint among which the wooden reliquary bust of 1700 and the big altar-piece of the XIX century of Roman school, given by Pope Pius IX during one of his trips to Gaeta. Another religious building of great importance is the Romanesque church of San Nicola and the oldest in Prossedi, built close to the first town wall to allow pilgrims to access it more easily. The façade has a large rose window with intertwined arches and smooth, twisted columns and a limestone portal sculpted with plant elements and anthropomorphic figures. Continuing towards Piazza Umberto I we find the Baronial Palace of Prossedi which dominates the village with its four rectangular bastions and a large inner courtyard with a well in the centre. Finally, just outside the village, on the road leading to Frosinone, we find the beautiful fountain of the popes erected by the Marquis Livio De Carolis in 1727 on the occasion of the visit of Pope Benedict XIII in that year.
