Construit en 1608, tous les travaux ont été achevés en 1660. En 1738, le cardinal Passionei l'a transformé en un centre de culture et de vie sociale, en y ajoutant une résidence de campagne pour lui-même et sa famille, faisant ainsi perdre à l'Ermitage son caractère originel d'ermitage. Lorsque le cardinal est mort, tous les bâtiments qu'il avait construits ont été démolis. Les moines ont abandonné l'Ermitage pendant les répressions napoléonienne (1810-15) et italienne (1873-96). Après la suppression de la Congrégation des Ermites, il est devenu la Maison Générale de la Congrégation des Ermites Camaldules de Monte Corona et le site du noviciat.
