San Jose Cathedral is an imposing Catholic church located in the heart of the city of San Jose, the capital of Costa Rica. Built between 1871 and 1887, the church features a neoclassical style with an ornate facade and a large marble altar.An interesting anecdote about the cathedral concerns its bell tower. In 1890, the bell tower collapsed during a major earthquake, and the new bell tower was rebuilt in reinforced concrete. The bell tower is about 72 meters high and is visible from many parts of the city. At the top of the tower is a large bell, called "La Negrita," which is one of the oldest in the country and has great symbolic value to the Costa Rican people.San Jose Cathedral has undergone several restorations and renovations over the years. In 2018, during one of these works, the remains of a crypt were discovered that is thought to have been used as the church's cemetery in the 19th century. Several human remains, including those of children and adults, were found inside the crypt.The cathedral also houses some important works of art, including a statue of St. Joseph, the church's patron saint, and a marble altarpiece depicting the Assumption of the Virgin. In the church's choir are some oil paintings by Costa Rican painter Enrique Echandi, depicting scenes from the life of Jesus and the saints.Every year, the Cathedral of San Jose attracts thousands of visitors and worshippers. During religious holidays, such as Holy Week and Christmas, the church is especially crowded. In addition, the cathedral is often used as a venue for sacred music concerts and other cultural events.
