About Sarangkot: Sunrise Over Annapurna from Pokhara

Sarangkot: Sunrise Over Annapurna from Pokhara - Pokhara | Secret World Trip Planner

At four in the morning, when Pokhara is still sleeping wrapped in lake mist, hundreds of people begin to climb towards Sarangkot with headlamps and thermoses of hot tea. The hill is located at about 1,592 meters above sea level, and the path that starts from the parking lot on the paved road takes about 45 minutes of walking on uneven stone steps, immersed in darkness and the singing of crickets. It is not an easy walk at that hour, but it is exactly this nighttime effort that makes the arrival so intense.

When the sky begins to lighten in the east, the profiles of Annapurna I — which reaches 8,091 meters, the eighth highest peak in the world — and Dhaulagiri — the seventh eight-thousander at 8,167 meters — slowly emerge from the darkness like paper silhouettes. Then it happens: the light first touches the snowy peaks, tinting them burnt orange, then pink, then dazzling white, while the valleys below remain in shadow. It is an optical phenomenon due to the angle of sunlight on the eternal snows, and it lasts no more than ten or fifteen minutes. Those who distract their gaze risk missing it.

The viewpoint and what you can really see

The observation platform at the top of Sarangkot is an open terrace with a concrete railing, flanked by several small cafes and restaurants selling tea, coffee, and fried eggs from dawn. It is neither a wild nor solitary place: on clear mornings, especially between October and November, the terrace is crowded with tourists, hikers, and photographers with tripods already set up an hour before sunrise. Yet the view still manages to silence everyone.

In addition to Annapurna and Dhaulagiri, on particularly clear days you can distinguish Machhapuchhre — the famous "Fish Tail Mountain" at 6,993 meters — with its unmistakable double peak shape. Below, Phewa Lake reflects the last stars and then the first colors of dawn, creating a natural mirror that doubles the spectacle. The city of Pokhara sprawls at the foot of the hill like a lit map.

How to get there and when to go

From Pokhara, tuk-tuks and taxis leave from the city center towards the road that climbs to Sarangkot as early as 3:30 in the morning. The taxi ride from the Lakeside area — the main tourist district — usually costs between 500 and 1,000 Nepalese rupees (equivalent to about 4-8 euros at the current exchange rate), but the price should always be agreed upon beforehand. From the parking area at altitude, the steps to the summit take about 45 minutes at a moderate pace: it's better to wear closed shoes and bring a flashlight, as the path is not illuminated.

The best season is autumn, between October and November, when the monsoons have ended and the air is clear. Alternatively, spring between March and May offers similar conditions. During the monsoon season, from June to September, the mountains are almost always covered by clouds and sunrise becomes a lottery. Winter, from December to February, can provide crystal-clear mornings but with temperatures close to zero at the top: a heavy jacket is essential.

The experience beyond photography

Sarangkot is not just a photographic point. The village itself, located just below the viewpoint, is inhabited by Gurung families and offers an authentic perspective on rural Nepali life. Some visitors choose to stop for breakfast in the small local restaurants, where dal bhat — the national dish made of rice, lentils, and vegetables — is served even in the early hours of the morning for hikers.

Those who want to extend the experience can continue trekking to Naudanda, following a ridge trail that offers continuous views of the mountains for several hours. The path is marked and can be navigated without a guide for those with basic hiking experience. Many paragliders take off right from Sarangkot in the morning hours, taking advantage of the thermal currents that form after sunrise: watching someone soar above Phewa Lake with Annapurna in the background is a spectacle in itself.

Practical tips to avoid mistakes

Arriving at least thirty minutes before dawn is essential to find a good spot on the terrace and to allow your eyes to adjust to the light. Bring water, a snack, and layered clothing: even in summer, temperatures at the top can be surprisingly cool before the sun is high. Avoiding full moon days is not necessary — in fact, climbing during a full moon can be magical — but checking the local weather forecast the night before is essential.

Entry to the viewing area may require a small municipal fee, which can be verified on-site. It is always advisable to carry Nepalese rupees in cash, as digital payments are not accepted everywhere at high altitudes. And finally: turn off the camera flash and simply watch, at least for those ten minutes when the peaks turn to gold.
