The basalt columns emerge from the rock like the pipes of a monumental organ, rising up to fifty meters, arranged in vertical rows that the Azat River has sculpted over millennia. You find yourself in the gorge that runs alongside the village of Garni, in central Armenia, about thirty kilometers from Yerevan, and the landscape that unfolds before your eyes resembles nothing of what one would expect from a walk along a Caucasian watercourse.
The Symphony of Stones — in Armenian Basaltե Սյուներ, meaning "basalt columns" — is the name locals use to refer to this natural geological formation that extends for about a kilometer along the banks of the Azat. It is a volcanic phenomenon: the basalt cooled slowly after ancient eruptions, contracting into hexagonal and pentagonal columns with a geometric precision that seems almost artificial. The formation is comparable in origin, but not in fame, to the more famous columns of the Giant's Causeway in Northern Ireland.
The path along the Azat
The trail begins just beyond the Temple of Garni, the only surviving Hellenistic building in Armenia, built in the 1st century AD and dedicated to the sun god Mihr. From the temple courtyard, one descends towards the edge of the gorge following a dirt path that in some places requires caution: the ground is uneven, with slippery stones near the water, and there are no railings or fixed signage along the entire route. The descent takes about fifteen to twenty minutes and leads directly to the banks of the river, where the basalt columns rise vertically on both sides of the gorge.
Walking along the riverbed, one can feel the change in temperature: the gorge is narrow and shaded for a good part of the day, and the air near the water remains cool even in the summer months. The columns vary in height and inclination — some are perfectly vertical, others slightly tilted towards the river, and still others have broken, accumulating in geometric blocks on the riverbed. The surface of the basalt is dark, almost black, with gray-blue hues where the river's humidity regularly reaches it.
What is observed up close
As one approaches the walls of the gorge, it is noticeable how each column has a well-defined polygonal cross-section: most are hexagonal, some pentagonal. The joints between one column and another are sharp, almost as if they have been cut by hand. At various points, the columns form fan-like structures, where the base widens and the columns diverge upwards at different angles — it is this characteristic, in particular, that inspired the name "organ pipes" used by many visitors.
On the riverbed, there are fallen basalt blocks that clearly show the internal structure of the columns in cross-section: the cooling rings and the granular texture of the volcanic rock are clearly visible. The Azat in summer is relatively low and in some stretches passable, which allows one to approach the opposite wall of the gorge to observe the formations from a different perspective. In spring, with the thaw, the river is much more turbulent and dangerous.
How to reach the site and practical advice
The most common way to get there is to leave from Yerevan with one of the shared minibuses — the marshrutka — which depart from the Kilikia station and cover the route to Garni in about forty minutes for a cost of a few hundred Armenian drams. Alternatively, many local agencies offer combined tours that include the Garni temple and the nearby Geghard monastery, declared a UNESCO heritage site in 2000, making the day more complete without the need for a personal car.
The best time to visit is early in the morning, preferably by nine: the slanting light dramatically illuminates the columns, the heat is bearable even in July and August, and organized groups generally arrive later. Entrance to the gorge is free and does not require a ticket, unlike the Garni temple which has an entrance fee. It is advisable to wear hiking shoes with non-slip soles, bring enough water — there are no refreshment points along the trail — and not to venture onto the riverbed during or immediately after heavy rains, when the water level can rise quickly.
An authentic place
What makes the Symphony of Stones different from many geological attractions is the almost complete absence of tourist infrastructure along the path. There are no explanatory panels, there are no protective barriers, there are no souvenir vendors along the trail. You walk on the same rock that local shepherds have walked on for generations, with the sound of the river as the only constant background.
The gorge remains little known outside the Armenian borders, and even among foreign visitors who reach Garni for the temple, many are unaware of the existence of the canyon just beneath their feet. Just follow the descending path to find yourself in a geological environment that, in its scale and natural precision, deserves attention as much as any man-made monument nearby.
