Top of the World
At the top of the Marienberg Fortress is Kappele Würzburg, a picturesque pilgrimage chapel built by Balthasar Neumann in the Russian Orthodox style between 1747 and 1950.
The building, nestled in the lovely woods above the Main River, features numerous frescoes by Matthias Günther.
This beautiful edifice of 18th Century is a great example of Baroque architecture. With its beautifully designed staircase, exquisitely designed shrine, paved terraces and mechanical organ, it draws a lot of tourist crowds. It is also one of the few churches in Germany that did not suffer much damage in the Second World War. A steep pathway formed by 265 steps leads from the river banks to the chapel, and along the way there is a large cross marking a prayer station.
