About The splendid village of Massa Marittima

The splendid village of Massa Marittima - Massa Marittima | Secret World Trip Planner

Massa Marittima is a beautiful town full of interesting medieval art. Probably of Etruscan origin, the town preserves many monuments of its most flourishing period, which can be made to begin in the mid-ninth century when the bishop settled there, until then resident in Populonia.the period of maximum splendor of the city is still that between the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, when Massa Marittima thanks to the wealth of silver mines, copper and pyrite present in the nearby Metalliferous Hills (interesting Historical Museum of the Mine), also exploited by the Etruscans, became a Free City (1225). The town, which is 380 metres above sea level, is divided into two parts, the lower part (or old town) where the Romanesque style predominates and the upper part (or new town, but dating back to the 13th and 14th centuries). The visit can start from Piazzale Mazzini, where there is a convenient parking fee, here is the Palazzo dell'Abbondanza (1265) characterized by three pointed arches, it was the grain warehouse of the city, below is the public fountain where recently was brought to light a fresco of which they had lost track.

Frequently Asked Questions

Massa Marittima is famous for its medieval art and its prosperous period between the 13th and 14th centuries, when it became a Free City in 1225 thanks to the wealth of silver, copper, and pyrite mines in the nearby Metalliferous Hills. The town has preserved many monuments from this flourishing era, and you can learn more about its mining heritage at the Historical Museum of the Mine.
Start your visit at Piazzale Mazzini, which offers convenient paid parking and is home to the impressive Palazzo dell'Abbondanza (1265), a grain warehouse characterized by three striking pointed arches. Below the palace is a public fountain where a recently discovered fresco has been brought to light.
The town is divided into two parts based on its elevation of 380 metres: the lower part (old town) where Romanesque architecture predominates, and the upper part (new town, though it dates back to the 13th and 14th centuries). This layout reflects the town's medieval growth and development over time.
Massa Marittima is probably of Etruscan origin, and its documented flourishing period began in the mid-ninth century when the bishop relocated there from Populonia. The Etruscans had previously exploited the same mineral-rich resources that later brought the town its greatest wealth during the medieval period.
The lower part of Massa Marittima, known as the old town, is predominantly characterized by Romanesque architecture. This style is exemplified in buildings like the Palazzo dell'Abbondanza with its distinctive pointed arches, which is one of the town's most notable medieval structures.
