Trieste: Fountain of the Four Continents

The fountain è an architectural construction of shells, dolphins and rocks mixed with crates, barrels and bales of goods and è topped by the’Angel of Fame who spreads the prosperity of Trieste to the world. At the four corners of the basin are four statues with an animal and each represents one of the four continents: Europe with a horse, Asia with a camel, Africa with a lion and America with a crocodile. Australia is not represented because at the time the fountain was built it had not yet been discovered. The veiled woman represents the Nile (its source was not yet known). The fountain, which had fallen into disrepair, was removed from the square in 1938 to make way for the stage for the Duce's rally visiting the cityà. After years of oblivion, it was repositioned in the early 1970s, following its extensive renovation, in a location shifted from its original location, and then again repositioned proportionally in the center of the facade of City Hall with the 2000/2001 work on the square designed by architect Bernard Huet, the winner of the competition held by the City Council.
