About Umm Qays: A Stunning View of Three Ancient Countries

Umm Qays: A Stunning View of Three Ancient Countries - Ash Shounah Ash Shemaleyah | Secret World Trip Planner

From the edge of the black basalt terraces of Umm Qays, the gaze simultaneously falls on the Sea of Galilee to the northwest, the Golan Heights to the north, and the Jordan Valley to the east. It is one of those moments when geography ceases to be an abstract concept and becomes something physical, almost overwhelming in its clarity. Yet this viewpoint, which encompasses three countries in a single glance, receives an infinitesimal fraction of the visitors that flock to Petra or Jerash each year.

Umm Qays stands on the site of the ancient Gadara, a Hellenistic and later Roman city that was part of the Decapolis, the league of ten autonomous cities under Roman influence. The visible ruins today — theater, colonnades, mausoleums — mainly date back to the Roman period, between the 1st and 3rd centuries AD. The site is located in the Irbid governorate, in the far northwest of Jordan, about 110 kilometers from Amman.

The landscape: colors that change with the light

At dawn, when the sun rises behind the visitor, the Sea of Galilee appears like a metallic mirror of gray-silver color, almost flat. The Golan Heights, still in shadow, form a dark and compact mass that seems to float above the valley mist. It is the moment when the scene has the least colors but the most depth, with the layers of the landscape standing out sharply due to the contrast between light and shadow.

By mid-morning, the side light reveals the texture of the basalt hills that surround the site: the black stone, the same used to build the ruins of Gadara, absorbs and reflects light differently compared to the light limestone of other Jordanian sites. The lake turns a deep blue, and on clear days, the Israeli and Syrian shores can be distinguished. At sunset, however, the sky to the west is tinged with orange above Galilee, while the Jordan Valley fills with a purple shadow that slowly rises from the valleys towards the heights.

The ruins of Gadara: what to observe on site

The Roman theater of Umm Qays is one of the most physically impressive details of the site: built entirely of black basalt, unlike the white or beige Roman theaters found elsewhere in Jordan, it has an almost Gothic hue that makes it immediately recognizable. It could accommodate about three thousand spectators and its cavea faces the view of the valley, an urban planning choice that does not seem accidental.

Next to the theater are the remains of a colonnaded decumanus, the main street of the Roman city, whose basalt paving stones are still walkable. Walking on this road, one can notice the ruts left by the wheels of carts over the centuries. Not far away, a Roman mausoleum from the 2nd century AD has been partially restored. Within the site, there is also a museum housed in a 19th-century Ottoman building, which collects sculptural artifacts and inscriptions found in the area.

How to get there and practical advice

Umm Qays: A Stunning View of Three Ancient Countries - Ash Shounah Ash Shemaleyah | Secret World Trip Planner

From Amman, Umm Qays can be easily reached by car by taking the road to Irbid and then following the signs to the site, for a total of about 110 kilometers. By taxi or rental car, the journey takes around an hour and a half. With public transport, it is necessary to first get to Irbid, from where local minibuses depart for Umm Qays, but the connections are irregular and require planning.

The best time to visit is early in the morning, preferably before 9:00 AM, both for the quality of light on the landscape and to avoid the heat during the hot seasons. The site is open every day and the entrance ticket, as with many sites of the Jordanian Department of Antiquities, is around 3 Jordanian dinars for foreign visitors, but it is included in the Jordan Pass if that document has already been purchased. Allow at least two hours to visit the site at a leisurely pace, including the museum.

Why it is worth the trip

The main reason why Umm Qays remains less visited compared to other Jordanian sites is probably its peripheral location with respect to standard tourist circuits. Those who arrive in Petra or Amman tend not to venture all the way to the far north. But it is precisely this marginality that makes the place different: no aggressive vendors, no crowds, the possibility to sit in silence on the edge of a black basalt terrace and look at three countries at the same time.

There is something concretely strange about observing from a Roman site of the 2nd century AD a geography that today is among the most politically complex in the world. The Sea of Galilee seen from Gadara is the same that ancient texts referred to as the Sea of Gennesaret. The Golan Heights visible to the north are still the subject of international disputes. The Jordan Valley below you is one of the lowest depressions on the Earth's surface. All of this can be seen together, from a black stone theater that is already two thousand years old.
