Val d'Orcia - San Quirico d'Orcia | Secret World Trip Planner

The Val d'Orcia, a combination of art and landscape, geographic space and ecosystem, is an expression of wonderful natural features but is also the result and testimony of the people who have lived there. According to UNESCO, this valley is an outstanding example of how the natural landscape was redesigned in the Renaissance and reflects the ideals of "good government" (14th and 15th centuries) typical of the Italian city-state, whose splendid places were celebrated by the painters of the Sienese School, which flourished between the 13th and 15th centuries. Gentle hills covered with dense vegetation of vineyards, olive groves, cypresses, beech and chestnut trees, interrupted by ancient settlements of medieval origin, rural houses and fortresses with impervious towers that are dispersed in the isolated and peaceful nature of the places: this is the scenery that presents itself to the eyes of the visitor to the Val d'Orcia, a striking scenario, just as portrayed by the masters of the Sienese School. The Val d'Orcia has linked its destinies to the Via Cassia, the great Roman road that connected Rome with northern Italy and that crosses the entire valley. A road that, for much of its route, traces the historic Via Francigena, where the sense of travel has the spirit of pilgrimage. The continuous transit of men and goods along this fundamental route decreed the importance of some of the towns in the area to the point of arousing the interest of the Republic of Siena in the 15th century. After the mid-sixteenth century, the Val d'Orcia entered the Florentine orbit along with the Sienese domains, retaining only the value of an agricultural area.

Frequently Asked Questions

Val d'Orcia was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2004 because it represents an outstanding example of how the natural landscape was redesigned during the Renaissance to reflect ideals of 'good government' from the 14th and 15th centuries. The valley is a masterpiece combining art, landscape, and human settlement, celebrated by painters of the Sienese School and shaped by centuries of cultural and agricultural development.
The ancient Via Cassia, a great Roman road that connected Rome with northern Italy, crosses the entire Val d'Orcia valley. Much of this route aligns with the historic Via Francigena, creating a pilgrimage spirit that has shaped the region's importance and the development of towns along this fundamental trade route.
The valley features gentle, rolling hills covered with vineyards, olive groves, cypress trees, beech and chestnut forests, interspersed with medieval settlements, rural houses, and fortified towers. This scenic landscape was immortalized by masters of the Sienese School and remains largely unchanged from Renaissance times, offering visitors the same striking views the painters once captured.
The Republic of Siena developed significant interest in Val d'Orcia during the 15th century due to the valley's strategic importance along the Via Cassia trade route. However, after the mid-sixteenth century, the region came under Florentine control along with other Sienese domains and was subsequently valued primarily as an agricultural area.
Val d'Orcia is an outstanding example of Renaissance landscape redesign, embodying the 14th and 15th-century concept of 'good government' typical of Italian city-states. The valley's carefully structured combination of natural features, settlements, and agricultural land represents both the artistic vision and practical governance ideals of the Renaissance period celebrated by the Sienese School painters.
