Top of the World
San Lorenzo di Sebato is located in the heart of the Pusteria Valley and stretches between 748 and 2,194 m above sea level. Its 3,400 inhabitants live in Castelbadia, Santo Stefano, Sares, Mantana, Ronchi, Oines, Elle, San Martino, Palù and Floronzo. San Lorenzo, located at the confluence of the rivers Gadera and Rienza, is not far from the skiing and hiking area of Plan de Corones.
Castel San Michele and Castel Badia, and a series of well-preserved farmsteads, are the jewels of the municipality. From an archaeological point of view San Lorenzo is the most important place in the whole valley, as in 1857 a milestone was found here. Today the stone is on display in the Ferdinandeum Museum in Innsbruck, while in San Lorenzo you can admire a duplicate of it. St. Lawrence was once the centre of the administrative district of Sebatum, in fact archaeological remains of houses, warehouses and accommodation have been found on the hill in front of the church. A further attraction is the church of Sares, a pilgrimage destination.
