Vermilion War Museum

The White War Museum in Vermiglio is a museum dedicated to the tragic history of World War I in the mountains of Val di Sole. This museum aims to tell new generations about the signs and memories of those years of conflict.The idea of creating the museum was born thanks to the efforts of Emilio Serra, a tireless "salvager," who in 1967 set up a vast collection of artifacts related to the White War along the southwestern Italian-Austrian front line within his Albergo Alpino.The exhibit, curated by Serra, offered a vivid account of a bygone era but still felt by the Vermiglio community. The people of Vermilion were sorely tried by the war and the tragic exodus to the Mitterndorf refugee camp. The collection, nurtured by Serra for forty years, has the merit of preserving in the collective memory a historical heritage of great importance.In recent years, the museum has undergone a major evolution, with the opening of the new exhibition on December 23, 2006 inside the building of the Cultural Pole of Vermiglio. The spaces were expanded and the rich collection of war artifacts was made more accessible.Documents, photos and objects tell the story of the White War in the new location, offering visitors moments of intense participation and moving remembrance for the people and places that were protagonists of such a troubled history.The creation of the new museum was made possible thanks to the sensitivity of the Serra family, particularly Pina and Achille, wife and son, respectively, of museum founder Emilio. Thanks to the collaboration of the municipal administration and the Rovereto War History Museum, the exceptional intuition born forty years ago has been able to renew itself and grow.
